Product Engineer Job Opportunity

Burro strives to provide innovative, best-value goods and services across a wide range of categories vital to enhancing the lives of our customers including energy, agriculture, water, sanitation, transportation, and more. The Product Engineer will work closely with Burro’s Founder, Country Manager, Product Development Fellows, third-party design consultants, manufacturing partners, Burro customers, and the rest of Team Burro to lead initiatives to evaluate existing and potential product offerings to improve their ability to meet the needs of Burro’s customers while enhancing Burro’s ability to supply them as cost-effectively as possible.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in Engineering. A strong focus on disciplines applicable to agriculture is preferred
  • At least 2-years’ experience leading field work to evaluate and refine technology relevant to enhancing the productivity of smallholder farmers in Ghana
  • Demonstrated ability to empathetically assess customer needs, contribute to design decisions, and effectively communicate requirements for implementation in manufacturing
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects with complex deliverables and substantial budgets
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English
  • Fluency in one or more local Ghanaian languages strongly preferred
  • CAD, woodworking, and welding experience preferred
  • Willing to relocate to Koforidua with frequent travel throughout Ghana
  • Passion for delivering on Burro’s promise — Do More

Fellowships

Burro fellowships offer an opportunity to accelerate a project vital to our mission while immersing yourself professionally and culturally with Ghanaians from all walks of life. Burro elevates, celebrates, and develops smart, collaborative, problem-solving, hard-working, civic-minded, entrepreneurial leaders—so expect fast-paced learning, an inspirational mission, and regular demands to step up and live up to Burro’s promise, Do More.

Fellows must have completed at least an undergraduate degree, and commit to a minimum of six months in Ghana. Free housing and a modest stipend are provided.

Burro Product Design Fellowship

The Product Design Fellow will lead initiatives to evaluate existing and potential product offerings to improve their ability to meet the needs of Burro’s customers while enhancing Burro’s ability to supply them as cost-effectively as possible. Specific duties include:

  • Lead iterative prototyping and user-testing of new product ideas including managing partnerships with local manufacturers and fabricators.
  • Contribute to ongoing research projects in the agriculture space, with a focus on identifying user needs and pain points, especially in the shea value chain.
  • Generate ideas for product opportunities that would be a good fit for Burro’s catalog of affordable productivity-enhancing tools.
  • Use and maintain Burro’s in-house prototyping and fabrication space, including supervising student research teams on use of woodworking, welding, and digital fabrication tools.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Design or Engineering, preferably Product Design, with strong portfolio including innovations designed specifically for affordability and functionality at the base of the pyramid
  • Demonstrated history of honesty, strong work ethic, self-motivation, and problem solving
  • Manual and digital fabrication experience (CAD, woodworking, welding etc.)
  • Any experience with agriculture or food processing is a plus, especially in the shea butter, palm oil, cassava, and vegetable farming value chains
  • Willing to relocate to Koforidua, Ghana for a minimum of six months
  • Passion for delivering on Burro’s promise—Do More

Projects for fellows could include market research studies, product design, design engineering, and spatial analysis.

Internships

Burro internships offer an opportunity to accelerate a project that is vital to Burro’s overall mission and goals. Burro elevates, celebrates, and develops smart, collaborative, problem-solving, hard-working,
ethical leaders who see Burro as the best place to build their careers. Projects range based on the qualifications and background of the intern, but all provide the opportunity to implement classroom-based learning in a business setting. Here are some of the projects that are currently available:

  • Product development

    Work on Burro’s R&D team to design and engineer new productivity-enhancing products with a focus on the agricultural sector.

  • Market research

    Work with Burro’s R&D team and Business Development department to conduct in-depth research into tools used for agriculture and food processing in Ghana.

  • Web and mobile application development

    Work with Burro’s ICT and Systems manager to develop cutting-edge web and mobile-based systems that enhance Burro’s ability to monitor operations and deliver best-in-class service.

  • GIS

    Work with Burro’s ICT and Systems manager to develop Burro’s nascent GIS capabilities.

  • Video production

    Work with Burro’s Creative Manager to write, film, edit, and produce videos that tell the story of Burro’s brand and products.

  • Photography

    Work with Burro’s Creative Manager to do both still and action photography of Burro products and people.

Qualifications

Individual projects each have specific qualifications, but Burro’s general qualifications are as follows:

  • At least two years’ experience in a Bachelors Program
  • Demonstrated history of honesty, strong work ethic, self-motivation, and problem solving
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English
  • Willing to relocate to Koforidua and beyond
  • Passion for helping people — Do More!
